Years after going their separate ways, three former classmates find themselves reunited in their hometown and drawn back into a complicated love triangle they thought they had left behind. Old attractions resurface, unresolved feelings threaten new relationships, and the familiarity of home gives way to something increasingly unsettling.
At the same time, a mysterious killing spree casts a shadow over the community. As the violence draws closer and unanswered questions begin to mount, suspicion creeps into the trio’s already fragile relationships. Jealousy, desire, and distrust blur together as each is forced to reconsider what they know about the other two—and what may have happened during the years they spent apart.
With their romantic entanglement becoming increasingly volatile and a killer still at large, the three are pulled into a dangerous web of paranoia where old feelings refuse to stay buried and no one is entirely above suspicion.
Production Notes
A Corpse in Kensington is an independent dark comedy, romance and slasher film written and directed by Brian Patrick Butler. Set over Halloween night in 2010, the film follows three former classmates whose rekindled love triangle becomes entangled with a mysterious killing spree in their hometown.
Halloween in Kensington
The film takes place in Kensington, a historic San Diego neighborhood known for its distinctive homes and close-knit residential streets. Producer Justin Burquist, a longtime Kensington resident, helped bring the production into the neighborhood.
Rather than using Halloween simply as a backdrop, the film builds its story around the atmosphere of Halloween night: parties, costumes, crowded streets and the uncertainty of what may be happening behind closed doors.
The 2010 setting also places the characters in a recognizable but increasingly distant period, before smartphones and social media became as pervasive in everyday life as they are today.
Blending Genres
While a killing spree drives the film's mystery, A Corpse in Kensington combines elements of the slasher film with dark comedy and romance. At the center of the story is a complicated relationship between three former high school classmates who reconnect as adults.
The film uses the conventions of several genres without settling entirely into any one of them, moving between romantic tension, psychological unease, drug-fueled behavior, comedy and violence.
Michael Madsen
Michael Madsen appears in the film in one of his final screen roles.
Madsen's work on A Corpse in Kensington began before principal photography, with his initial voice recordings completed at Lime Studios in Santa Monica, California. His performance subsequently became part of the film's Halloween-night story.
His involvement also gave the production an unusual geographic bookend: although A Corpse in Kensington was principally made in San Diego, some of the earliest work on the film took place in Los Angeles.
From San Diego to Los Angeles
Principal photography centered on San Diego, including the Kensington neighborhood in which the story is set.
The production later returned to Los Angeles during post-production. Sound design and the film's final mix were completed at MelodyGun Sound Studios in Los Angeles.
As a result, the production effectively began and ended in Los Angeles while the film itself was developed and principally produced in San Diego.
An Independent Production
A Corpse in Kensington continues writer-director Brian Patrick Butler's work in independent genre filmmaking. The 93-minute feature was produced outside the traditional studio system, with its locations, performances and genre mixture forming the foundation of the production.
The completed film is currently being prepared for its festival and release campaign.
